Effects of gestational and lactational exposure to bisphenol a on the hypothalamic control mechanism of reproduction in female rats

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a monomer component of epoxy resins and is abundant in the environment. This man-made chemical mimics estrogen in its action and is therefore called an environmental endocrine disruptor. In the present study, we examined the effects of BPA exposure during gestational and lactational periods on adult reproductive functions which are controlled by the hypothalamus. Rats were treated with BPA via the drinking water for their mothers at the concentration of 10 ppm. Significant influence of the treatment was observed in female offspring in the age, body weight, and the vaginal morphology on the day of the vaginal opening, and in the age on the day of the first estrus, and in the ovarian weight on the day of the estrus Similarly, the exposure to BPA during gestation and lactation failed to affect any of reproductive parameters including the estrous cyclicity and the surge secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in 2-, 4-, and 7-month-old female rats. Further, there was no significant effect on the estrogen-induced surge secretion of LH and PRL. In conclusion, under the conditions used in the present study, there was little effect of BPA on the hypothalamus-controlled reproductive functions in female rats when they were exposed to it during gestation and lactation.
