Buckyballs with studs: [70]Fullerene has been converted into di- and trinuclear complexes [M2 (C70Ar6)Cp 2], [M2(C70Ar7H)Cp2], and [M3(C70Ar7)Cp3] (M=Fe, Ru; Ar=aryl; Cp=C5H5; see picture, M purple, C pink, blue, gray) in which the metal atoms interact electronically through the [70]fullerene π-conjugated system. The structures and the electrochemical properties of these complexes suggest their use in molecular electronics.
