Determinants of Revisions to Article Processing Charges for BMC Journals

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

This study investigates the article processing charges for 160 journals independently launched by a pioneering open access journal publisher, BMC (formerly known as BioMed Central), and identifies the factors influencing the revisions. The study finds that BMC raised the article processing charges for 105 out of 160 journals from 2018 to 2019, while 35 journals reduced prices and the remaining 20 did not change them at all. This study also finds that frequently cited journals significantly raise their article processing charges, while journals recently launched with low citation scores reduce them. The results suggest that BMC considers factors other than costs when revising article processing charges.
