This paper presents a computational method of data assimilation to identify the elasto-plastic parameters of geomaterials based on field and experimental measurements using a particle filter (PF) while overcoming some difficulties from which the existing inverse analysis strategies have suffered. By applying the 'sequential important sampling', one of the alternative computational procedures to the PF, the current paper shows a couple of numerical analyses, namely, 1) the observed settlement of a hypothetical ground under embankment loading and 2) measurements for a small scale experiment on saturated clay under continuous loading, to examine the applicability of the PF to geotechnical behavior in construction sequences.
